The Catholic University of Korea Eunpyeong St. Mary's Hospital (가톨릭대학교 은평성모병원) is an 808-bed tertiary teaching hospital at 1021 Tongil-ro, Jingwan-dong, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, occupying a purpose-built 17-floors-above/7-below-ground campus that opened in 2019. It is the institutional successor to the Catholic University of Korea St. Paul's Hospital (가톨릭대학교 성바오로병원, formerly of Cheongnyangni, Dongdaemun-gu), a lineage both the hospital's own history page and Korean Wikipedia trace to a 1944 dispensary, a 1947 clinic, and the hospital's actual 1957 opening, before the institution relocated wholesale to the new Eunpyeong-gu building and took its current name in 2019 — a fact easy to miss because the site's English-language page title still reads the stale, unmigrated 'The Catholic University of Korea ST.PAUL'S Hospital', even though every current Korean-language signal (title, og:title, meta description, footer copyright, and the page's own JS instName variable) confirms the live entity is 가톨릭대학교 은평성모병원. It is part of the Catholic University of Korea's CMC ('가톨릭중앙의료원') hospital network, operated by the non-profit School Foundation Catholic Educational Foundation. Its flagship program is the '김수환 추기경 기념' organ-transplant hospital-within-hospital (named for the late Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan, himself a cornea donor), alongside a dedicated cancer center, cardiovascular hospital, blood/hematology hospital, robotic-surgery center, high-risk maternal-fetal/NICU center, and a hospice & palliative care center, spanning 44 named specialty centers in total per the hospital's own department directory. No accreditation badge is asserted: the only KOIHA accreditation-cycle date found (2015) belongs to the predecessor St. Paul's Hospital's own pre-2019 history log and is rejected under our review's date-sanity rule as inapplicable to the current building, and independent directory verification (소비자24, koiha.or.kr) was not reachable without a browser in this pass.

Verified against: Hospital official site — home page (redirect target /page/main); confirms official Korean name (가톨릭대학교 은평성모병원), full postal address, main phone line, and the 2019 copyright/founding footer · Own site — 병원 연혁 (History) page: full institutional timeline (1944 Jegi-dong dispensary → 1947 성모의원 → 1957 성바오로병원 opening in Cheongnyangni/Dongdaemun-gu → multiple pre-2019 accreditation/award entries including the 2015 2nd-cycle KOIHA-predecessor entry → timeline stops 2017) plus current 규모/현황 (facility overview: 808 licensed beds, 17F above/7F below ground, 178,623.92m² floor area, Eunpyeong-gu/Jingwan-dong location) and the CMC network hospital directory footer · Own site — mandated 비급여 진료비용 disclosure page (public UI; JS-rendered, see krn_hospprices file for the backing JSON API used to extract line items) and its footer, restating the address · Own site — 부서(진료지원부서/전문지원센터) directory API, listing all 44 named specialty centers (deptClsf=C) · Own site — English international-patient home page; checked for a JCI claim (none found); page <title> and JS window.instName variable both captured to document the stale-title vs live-entity discrepancy noted in the summary · Own site — 종합건강검진안내 (Comprehensive Health Screening) program page, source for the health-screening base-tier price filed in krn_hospprices · Korean Wikipedia — 가톨릭대학교 은평성모병원: corroborates the 1944/1947/1957/2019 institutional lineage and current facts (808 beds, Eunpyeong-gu address, 39 clinical departments, secondary-care classification) independently of the hospital's own site · Korea Consumer Agency (소비자24) — attempted KOIHA accreditation directory verification; returns only a client-side SPA shell (empty body, ~1.8KB), not queryable via WebFetch/curl · KOIHA (의료기관평가인증원) — attempted accreditation-search verification; both the homepage and the /web/kr/assessment/accResearch.do search page are JS-rendered nav shells with no server-side search results reachable via curl/WebFetch · OpenStreetMap Nominatim geocode — direct name match on 가톨릭대학교 은평성모병원, address confirms '1021, 통일로, 진관동, 은평구, 서울특별시, 03312, 대한민국' · Reference roster — Newsweek Korea hospital ranking pack (rank 66), used to confirm 국문명/city/district/chain against the target and rule out any 성모/St. Mary's sibling-campus mismatch · rankings.newsweek.com · google.com

Exceptional for a hospital

better than ~95% of hospitals

A hospital's stars run far lower than shops or restaurants — reviews are written amid illness, big bills and stress, and unhappy patients review the most. The average hospital scores just 2.85★ on Google, so This hospital's 3.9★ sits near the top of the range.

의료기관인증 (KOIHA Hospital Accreditation) — NOT verified for the current Eunpyeong-gu campus

의료기관평가인증원 (Korea Institute for Healthcare Accreditation / KOIHA)

The only accreditation-cycle entry findable on the hospital's own 병원 연혁 (history) page is dated 2015.03 ('2주기 의료기관 평가 인증 획득', 2nd-cycle accreditation) — but this entry sits inside a chronological timeline that is verifiably the PREDECESSOR institution's history (Catholic University of Korea St. Paul's Hospital, Dongdaemun-gu/Cheongnyangni: repeated 동대문구청/동대문경찰서 MOU entries, a lone 2018 outpatient/admission-volume statistic block, and the timeline stopping at 2017 with no entry for the 2019 relocation/opening of the current Eunpyeong-gu building). Per this pipeline's date-sanity rule (an accreditation/claim that predates the building is rejected), the 2015 cycle predates the 2019 opening of the current 808-bed Eunpyeong-gu campus and is NOT treated as a valid claim for the entity being profiled here. Independently, it is also NOT directory-verifiable in this pass: the Korea Consumer Agency registry (소비자24, consumer.go.kr) serves only a client-side SPA shell (title '소비자24', ~1.8KB empty-body response) unqueryable by WebFetch/curl, and koiha.or.kr's own accreditation-search page (/web/kr/assessment/accResearch.do) is likewise a JS-rendered nav shell with no server-rendered search results reachable by curl/WebFetch, per this pipeline's no-browser tooling constraint. No accreditation claim specific to the post-2019 Eunpyeong-gu campus was found on the current site. Kept here only as a caveated historical data point (not directory-verified; underlying claim predates the current building), not as a badge.

JCI (Joint Commission International)

Joint Commission International

No JCI claim found on the hospital's own Korean site (병원 연혁/history, 병원장 인사말/greeting pages) or its English international-patient page (en.common.main.main.sp) — not accredited, or at least not self-advertised; not included as a badge or claim.

Eunpyeong St. Mary's is the institutional successor to the Catholic University of Korea St. Paul's Hospital (가톨릭대학교 성바오로병원), which the hospital's own 병원 연혁 (history) page and Korean Wikipedia both trace to a 1944 dispensary in Jegi-dong ('제기동 시약소'), a 1947 clinic ('성모의원 개원'), and the December 1957 opening of 성바오로병원 itself (then in Cheongnyangni, Dongdaemun-gu) — before the whole institution relocated to a newly built 808-bed campus in Eunpyeong-gu and was renamed 가톨릭대학교 은평성모병원 in 2019 (own-site copyright footer: 'copyright(c) 2019 The Catholic University of Korea, Eunpyeong St. Mary's Hospital'). The CMC network hospital directory footer on the hospital's own site lists 은평성모병원 as one of eight CMC-network hospitals (no separate 'St. Paul's' entry remains), consistent with a merger/relocation rather than two coexisting hospitals.

Traveling to Seoul, South Korea

Sourced Full South Korea guide →

South Korea crossed the 1-million mark as a medical-travel destination for the first time in 2024: about 1.17 million foreign patients were treated, up 93.2% from 610,000 in 2023 (Ministry of Health and Welfare / KHIDI). The largest patient groups came from Japan, China, the United States, Thailand and Taiwan, and the most-used specialties were dermatology, plastic surgery, internal/general medicine and health screening. Seoul concentrates most volume, drawing patients for aesthetic and dermatologic care, health check-ups, oncology and advanced surgery delivered in JCI-accredited hospitals with dedicated international-patient centers — at prices below the US while the government regulates and publishes standards through KHIDI's Medical Korea program.

Visa
Most Western nationalities (US, UK, EU/Schengen, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan) enter visa-free for short medical or tourist visits. The K-ETA (electronic travel authorization) requirement is temporarily WAIVED for 67 countries and territories through 31 December 2026 — eligible travellers enter without applying for a K-ETA; the requirement is expected to resume 1 January 2027. Confirm your nationality's current rule before travelling.
Medical / long-stay visa
For treatment, foreign patients typically use the C-3-3 medical tourism visa (short-term, stays up to 90 days, generally not extendable beyond 90 days except in special circumstances). For treatment or recovery longer than 90 days, patients change to or apply for the G-1-10 long-term medical treatment visa, which can be extended inside Korea; it requires hospital documentation (medical opinion, treatment schedule, payment records). Applications must be tied to a medical institution registered with KTO/KHIDI.
Arrival
From 1 January 2026, all foreign arrivals must file the mandatory digital e-Arrival Card online (within 3 days before arrival) — it replaces the paper disembarkation card and is a declaration, not a visa. Travellers who hold an approved K-ETA are exempt from the arrival card, but nationals of K-ETA-waived countries (US, UK, EU, Japan, etc.) must still complete the e-Arrival Card.
Currency
South Korean Won (KRW, ₩)
Languages
Korean; English widely spoken in international-patient centers at major hospitals, with interpreter services in multiple languages
Safety & recourse
Very safe for visitors · Established malpractice recourse

General guidance — confirm current rules for your nationality with official sources. Verified against: Korea Immigration — K-ETA temporary exemption extended to 31 Dec 2026 (MOFA/KPMG GMS alert) · Korea e-Arrival Card mandatory from 1 Jan 2026 · Medical Korea — medical visa (C-3-3 / G-1-10), KHIDI · MOHW — Korea attracts 1.17 million foreign patients in 2024.
