#1 Bumrungrad International Hospital 3.8★ JCI accredited
Opened in 1980, Bumrungrad is Southeast Asia's largest private hospital and was the first hospital in Asia to earn JCI accreditation (2002). It runs 47 specialty centers with ~1,200 physicians and dentists, and treats over 1.1 million patients a year — including ~520,000 international patients from 190+ countries.
How we collect & verify prices What it costs ↓
In plain words · Thailand is Asia's leading medical-travel destination, drawing well over a million international patients a year to JCI-accredited hospitals in Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai. Patients come for English-speaking specialists, short waiting times, hotel-grade recovery rooms and prices far below the US, UK and Australia — most from the Middle East, South & East Asia, and the West.

Why care costs what it does here
Sourced macro factorsLower local costs are why care is cheaper in Thailand — not lower quality. These are the underlying inputs: what clinicians earn, what tax applies to care, and the country's income level.
Specialist salary survey-based estimate · Nurse salary survey-based estimate · Healthcare VAT official · GDP per capita official.
Medical/dental and other professional healthcare services are VAT-exempt under the Thai Revenue Code; exempt businesses cannot issue tax invoices or reclaim input VAT

How healthcare works in Thailand
SourcedThe system a traveller is entering — who insures, who provides, and how a foreign patient actually pays. Sourced facts only, each with its origin.
- System
- Universal health care is delivered through three public schemes overseen by the Ministry of Public Health: the tax-funded Universal Coverage Scheme (the '30-baht' scheme launched in 2002) for the general public, Social Security for private-sector employees, and the Civil Servant Medical Benefit Scheme.
- Wikipedia, Healthcare in Thailand · 2024 ↗
- Coverage
- Coverage is near-total — the World Bank reports about 99.5% of the population have health-protection coverage across the three schemes.
- World Bank, via Wikipedia (Healthcare in Thailand) · 2024 ↗
- Public vs private
- Financing is majority-public: the WHO found about 65% of Thailand's health expenditure came from government and 35% from private sources, though private hospitals dominate the medical-travel segment.
- WHO, via Wikipedia (Healthcare in Thailand) · 2004 ↗
- Funding
- The Universal Coverage Scheme is financed from general taxation, while Social Security is funded by payroll contributions shared between private-sector employees and employers.
- Wikipedia, Healthcare in Thailand · 2024 ↗
- How foreigners pay
- Thailand is a leading medical-tourism destination; short-term foreign patients are not in the public schemes and self-pay at international private hospitals such as Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital, or use private/travel insurance.
- Wikipedia, Healthcare in Thailand · 2024 ↗
- Out-of-pocket
- Thanks to broad universal coverage, out-of-pocket spending is low for a middle-income country — about 9.2% of current health expenditure.
- World Bank (SH.XPD.OOPC.CH.ZS) · 2022 ↗
- Emergency care
- The nationwide medical-emergency number is 1669, dispatching free ambulance response and handling on the order of 1.5 million emergencies a year.
- National Institute for Emergency Medicine / Wikipedia (Healthcare in Thailand) · 2024 ↗
- Quality & outcomes
- Basic outcomes are strong — about 99% of births are attended by skilled personnel and 98% of one-year-olds are immunised against measles — and Thailand hosts one of the world's largest concentrations of JCI-accredited hospitals, anchoring its medical-travel reputation.
