Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by uric-acid crystals in a joint — classically the big toe — bringing sudden severe pain, swelling and redness. It is diagnosed with joint-fluid analysis and uric-acid blood tests and treated with anti-inflammatory medicines for flares and urate-lowering medicines with diet to prevent them.
