Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the tissue along the sole that causes stabbing heel pain, worst on the first steps in the morning. It is diagnosed by exam (X-ray to exclude other causes) and treated with stretching, supportive footwear, orthotics, rest, injections, and rarely surgery.
