A pterygium is a non-cancerous growth of conjunctival tissue that creeps onto the cornea, linked to sun, wind and dust exposure, and common in tropical outdoor workers. It is diagnosed on an eye exam and managed with lubricants and steroid drops, or surgically removed if it threatens vision or for cosmetic reasons.
