A pulmonary embolism is a sudden blockage of a lung artery, usually by a blood clot that travelled from a deep vein in the leg (DVT). It causes sudden breathlessness, chest pain and a fast heartbeat, is diagnosed with CT pulmonary angiography and D-dimer blood tests, and treated urgently with blood thinners or clot-dissolving drugs.
