Sickle cell anemia treatment cost
Sickle cell anemia is an inherited disorder in which abnormal hemoglobin makes red cells stiff and crescent-shaped, blocking blood vessels and causing painful crises and chronic anemia. It is diagnosed with blood and genetic tests (and newborn screening) and managed with medicines such as hydroxyurea, pain control, transfusions and, potentially curatively, stem-cell transplant or gene therapy.
