Getting to Taiwan
SourcedVisa, arrival & money — plus the safety, recourse & doctor-verification most sites skip.
Getting there
Visa
Tiered visa-free entry by nationality (Bureau of Consular Affairs, BOCA): 90 days for ~57 countries (most of the EU, US, UK, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Israel and others); 30 days for Malaysia, Singapore and several Caribbean/Central American states; 14 days for Oman; a running trial 14-day visa-free scheme for Thailand, Brunei and the Philippines (through 2027-07-31). All other nationalities require a visa. British and Canadian nationals can extend their 90-day visa-free stay by a further 90 days (max 180 days total). Confirm your nationality's current rule before travelling.
Medical / long-stay visa
Taiwan has a DEDICATED short-term medical-treatment stay-visa ('外籍人士來台短期就醫申請停留簽證', BOCA's foreign-nationals stay-visa category #13), distinct from tourism/business visas — a materially stronger, more explicit medical-visa regime than Turkey's (which has none). Eligibility is gated on two conditions: the treated condition must be on MOHW's published list of diseases eligible for foreign/PRC-resident treatment in Taiwan, and treatment must be at one of MOHW's published 'International Medical Service Internationalization' member institutions (mostly in Taipei). Requirements: proof of funds or a payment agreement with the Taiwan institution, a diagnosis certificate from a foreign hospital, a treatment plan from the Taiwan institution, and a round-trip ticket. Up to 2 accompanying persons are allowed (spouse/relative within the 3rd degree, or 2 home-country medical staff); emergency medical visas can be filed directly by the Taiwan medical institution with BOCA.

How healthcare works in Taiwan
SourcedThe system a traveller is entering — who insures, who provides, and how a foreign patient actually pays. Sourced facts only, each with its origin.
- System
- Taiwan runs a single, mandatory National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme administered by the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA), which publishes a nationally-uniform fee schedule of medical service payment items (醫療服務給付項目及支付標準 — 6,098 line items, updated daily) — a single-payer social-insurance model, not a private-insurer market.
- NHIA (National Health Insurance Administration) open-data platform — 醫療服務給付項目及支付標準 fee-schedule dataset · 2026 ↗
- How foreigners pay
- Cash-pay and international patients are billed off each hospital's own self-pay price list (自費項目收費標準), not the NHI mechanism at all — NHI's fee schedule contains zero line items for procedures like dental implants, confirming they are 100% self-pay nationwide, and there is no separate international-patient tariff: foreigners pay the same published self-pay rates a domestic cash patient would.
- NHIA fee-schedule dataset (grepped for 植體/人工植牙/植牙 — zero hits) + Taiwan MOHW medical-travel visa program · 2026 ↗
- Out-of-pocket
- Medical services, medicine, ward lodging and meals provided by hospitals, clinics and sanitariums are statutorily exempt from Taiwan's business tax (加值型及非加值型營業稅法, Article 8 item 3 — the functional VAT equivalent, standard rate 5% elsewhere) — a 0% rate that applies to self-pay and international-patient billing the same as domestic care.
