Top oncologist department · Newsweek #33 in South Korea

#33 Pusan National University Hospital BB 3.8★ KOIHA 급성기병원 인증 (Acute Care Hospital Accreditation)

Pusan National University Hospital (부산대학교병원) is the main campus — in Seo-gu, Busan, tracing its origin to the Pusan National University College of Medicine Affiliated Hospital opened in 1956 (renamed to its current name in 1988, converted to an independent public corporation in 1994) — of the Pusan National University Hospital network, distinct from its satellite Yangsan campus (양산부산대학교병원, Yangsan city, a separate hospital). A public tertiary/advanced-general hospital (상급종합병원) with roughly 1,040 licensed beds, it runs a regional (Level-I) trauma center, a regional emergency medical center, a regional cancer center, organ- and stem-cell-transplant programs, robotic surgery, and an international healthcare center, and holds current KOIHA acute-care hospital accreditation (2023-2027).

When to see an oncologist — and what the first visit looks like

Modeled preview

A planning frame — the referral triggers, what happens in the room, and what to bring so the visit isn't wasted.

When it's time

  • A confirmed or suspected cancer diagnosis from a biopsy or scan
  • An abnormal screening result that needs staging
  • A second opinion on a proposed treatment plan
  • Follow-up care after treatment abroad or at home

What happens

  1. 1History & examination — your story first, then a focused exam
  2. 2Review of the records and imaging you brought
  3. 3Tests ordered where needed (billed separately as a rule)
  4. 4A working diagnosis and treatment options discussed
  5. 5A written plan — and an itemized quote if treatment is proposed

What to bring

  • Passport & travel insurance details
  • Recent scans and imaging (disc or digital link)
  • Lab results and current medication list
  • Referral letters or prior treatment summaries, translated to English

How to vet an oncologist

Modeled preview

Credentials and case volume decide outcomes more than the consultation fee — the checklist an expert would put to any candidate.

  1. 1Board certification in this specialty — which board, which year?
  2. 2Are cases reviewed by a multidisciplinary tumor board?
  3. 3How many cases like mine do you see per year?
  4. 4Do you work within a hospital that can handle complications?
  5. 5Who covers follow-up questions after I fly home?
  6. 6Is the consultation fee credited against treatment if I proceed?

South Korea for medical travel — safety, recourse & visa

Sourced Full South Korea guide →

What matters if it goes wrong, and what it takes to get there — country-level, verifiable guidance in one place.

Visa
Most Western nationalities (US, UK, EU/Schengen, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan) enter visa-free for short medical or tourist visits. The K-ETA (electronic travel authorization) requirement is temporarily WAIVED for 67 countries and territories through 31 December 2026 — eligible travellers enter without applying for a K-ETA; the requirement is expected to resume 1 January 2027. Confirm your nationality's current rule before travelling.
Medical / long-stay visa
For treatment, foreign patients typically use the C-3-3 medical tourism visa (short-term, stays up to 90 days, generally not extendable beyond 90 days except in special circumstances). For treatment or recovery longer than 90 days, patients change to or apply for the G-1-10 long-term medical treatment visa, which can be extended inside Korea; it requires hospital documentation (medical opinion, treatment schedule, payment records). Applications must be tied to a medical institution registered with KTO/KHIDI.
Arrival
From 1 January 2026, all foreign arrivals must file the mandatory digital e-Arrival Card online (within 3 days before arrival) — it replaces the paper disembarkation card and is a declaration, not a visa. Travellers who hold an approved K-ETA are exempt from the arrival card, but nationals of K-ETA-waived countries (US, UK, EU, Japan, etc.) must still complete the e-Arrival Card.

General guidance from public sources — confirm current rules for your nationality. Verified against: Korea Immigration — K-ETA temporary exemption extended to 31 Dec 2026 (MOFA/KPMG GMS alert) · Korea e-Arrival Card mandatory from 1 Jan 2026 · Medical Korea — medical visa (C-3-3 / G-1-10), KHIDI · MOHW — Korea attracts 1.17 million foreign patients in 2024.
